How the Niners Began

How the Niners Began

In the 1997-1998 season, Carol Bjorklund, Eileen Donnelly, Trish Pouzar, and
Sally Herthel approached Director of Golf Operations, Malia Folquet, with an
idea to start a new golf group for some women who were beginner golfers.
The existing women’s group played 18 holes each week, and they played
competitively. As envisioned, the proposed group would focus more on fun,
less on competition, but be a place to learn the game of golf and its rules.

Malia embraced the idea. The plans for the Niners were developed in one
afternoon at a meeting in the lounge by fifteen interested women. The plans
included weekly golf preceded by a warm-up session with Patty (one of the
golf pros at the club).

At Malia’s insistence, they created a mission statement:

“Have fun, meet new friends, learn the rules of golf, and have lunch.”
